Gujiao Tower, also known as Qiao Tower and commonly called the Bell and Drum Tower, is located at the junction of Shengping Street and Jingxian Street in Guangde, Anhui Province, People's Republic of China, and originally stood above the ceremonial gate due south of the Guangde prefectural office. The Daming Yitong Zhi and four editions of the Guangde Prefecture Gazetteer all record that the tower was 'built by Zhu Shouchang, who held military office at the beginning of the Xining era of the Song'; some hold that it was built in the Zhiping period of the Northern Song (1064-1067) and completed in the first year of Xining (1068), while others say it was 'first built in the Northern Qi by the provincial governor Li Chong while he held office in Jiaozhou'. It was repaired many times in later dynasties, and in the 26th year of the Republic (1937) it was set on fire and destroyed by Japanese troops (one account says it was bombed by Japanese aircraft). In March 1989 the Guangde County People's Government listed it as a county-level cultural relic protection unit.
