The Zhedong Canal, also known as the Hangyong Canal, is a canal in Zhejiang Province, China. It starts at Xixing Subdistrict in Binjiang District, Hangzhou in the west, crosses the Cao'e River, passes through Shaoxing, and ends at the mouth of the Yong River in Zhenhai District, Ningbo in the east, with a total length of 239 kilometres. The earliest-dug part of the canal is the Shanyin Old Waterway in Shaoxing, which dates from the Spring and Autumn period. In the Western Jin dynasty He Xun, the Neishi of Kuaiji, directed the digging of the Xixing Canal, which thereafter combined with the canal east of the Cao'e River to form a complete canal running from the Qiantang River in the west to the East China Sea in the east. When the Southern Song dynasty made Lin'an its capital, the Zhedong Canal became an important shipping waterway of the time. From the Yuan to the Qing dynasty the canal's importance declined somewhat, but it remained navigable. Only in modern times, under the impact of new forms of transport, was its role gradually superseded. In 2002 the whole Zhedong Canal was renovated; part of it opened to navigation at the end of 2007 and the works were completed in 2009, but the Ningbo section could not be linked up for a long time and only opened to navigation at the end of 2013.<
