Nanchong, called Guozhou and Shunqing in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the administration of Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China, located in the north-east of Sichuan Province. To the east the city borders Dazhou and Bazhong, to the north Guangyuan, to the west Mianyang and Suining, and to the south Guang'an. It lies in the north-eastern part of the Sichuan Basin, with low mountain country in the north and hill country of eastern Sichuan in the south. The Jialing River runs through the city from north to south and meets the Xichong River in the urban area. The city has a total area of 12,482 square kilometres and a population of 6.364 million, and the People's Government is seated in Shunqing District. Nanchong is an important production base of commercial grain and agricultural and sideline products in the province, and is famous for its citrus fruit and silk, earning it the names of the Fruit City and the Silk Capital. It is also a China Excellent Tourist City, a National Garden City, the northern central city of the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone and the economic, cultural, information, commercial and logistics centre and transport hub of the north-eastern Sichuan region.
