Miyake-jima is an island in the Izu Islands of Japan. It lies 175 kilometres south of Tokyo and 57 kilometres south of Izu Oshima. Administratively it belongs to Miyake Village, Tokyo. The island is also part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The Oyama volcano on the island erupts frequently and is classified by the Japan Meteorological Agency as a volcano of activity rank A. After 1085, eruptions were recorded in 1154, 1469, 1535, 1595, 1643, 1712, 1763, 1811, 1835, 1874, 1940, 1962, 1983 and 2000.
