Wuhan South Lake is located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and takes its name from lying south of Wuchang; it is a freshwater lake formed when a river became silted up. In ancient times South Lake was broad and connected with the Yangtze River. After the Ming dynasty it gradually shrank because of silting and of reclaiming lake land for farming. In Wuhan's development over recent decades, reclaiming lakes for property development became a trend, which has only stopped in recent years.
