Baipenzhu Reservoir is in Huidong County, Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China, on the upper reaches of the Xizhi River and on the north-western slopes of Lianhua Mountain; together with Lianhua Mountain it forms the Guangdong Lianhuashan Baipenzhu Provincial Nature Reserve. Originally called the Xizhi River Water Control Project, it is a large class-one reservoir whose main functions are flood control and water supply, with irrigation and power generation as secondary purposes. Construction began in October 1959 and was halted in August 1960; work resumed in April 1977, the power station was completed and put into operation on 23 August 1985, and the whole project passed final acceptance on 21 December 1987.
