Xiangyang City is located in Xiangyang Municipality in the north-west of Hubei Province, on the south bank of the middle reaches of the Han River. Surrounded by water on three sides and backed by hills on one, with high walls and deep moats, it is easy to defend and hard to attack, and is praised as 'Iron-clad Xiangyang' and 'the first city of China'. It was therefore valued by military strategists through the ages. In 2001 the Xiangyang city wall was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the fifth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.
